Fluoride 101: what it does for enamel

Fluoride is a mineral that helps enamel stay stronger in an acidic mouth.

The daily tug-of-war

Acids from plaque temporarily soften enamel. Saliva and minerals rebuild it. Fluoride helps that rebuild step.

Where people get it

  • Fluoride toothpaste.
  • Some community tap water.
  • Professional varnishes or gels at dental visits.
  • Prescription pastes for higher-risk patients.

Reading a paste label

Look for fluoride (often as sodium fluoride or stannous fluoride) and the ADA Seal when you want an extra check on claims.
